I am very pleased to share and welcome Sean O’Flynn to the Pilon School of Business effective August 22, 2022, Professor, Collective Bargaining and Industrial Relations.
Please join us in welcoming our faculty colleague to the PSB Community.
Sean joined Sheridan in 2019 as a Human Resource Business Partner. In his current role with Sheridan College, he works with unions and managers to effectively work through employee relations matters.
Before joining Sheridan, he worked for over 10 years in the field of Labour and Industrial Relations. Working in several industries and a variety of roles, he has a strong understanding of the field of labour relations/human resources. In these roles, he has gained an awareness of best practices for engaging with unions and managing employees.
At Hamilton Health Sciences, he assisted managers in conducting workplace investigations and provided advice and guidance on collective agreements. In addition, he participated in the grievance process and attended labour-management meetings as required.
In his role at McMaster University, he conducted investigations into harassment and discrimination complaints and other workplace misconduct.
At Toyota, he gained valuable experience working in a non-union environment and developed a great appreciation of Toyota’s focus on continuous improvement and respect for people. In this role, he was responsible for investigating human rights complaints and other misconduct.
In his roles at the City of Ottawa and City of Toronto, he advised on the interpretation of collective agreements, provided strategic advice to managers and assisted with collective bargaining. In performing his duties, he frequently engaged with union representatives in the grievance process and worked through labour relations matters.
Working as the Labour Relations Officer for the SAIT Academic Faculty Association, he chaired the bargaining committee and developed an understanding of the function and role unions have in the workplace.
Throughout his various roles, he has had to interpret collective agreement language and provide advice on potential proposals for bargaining.
Sean holds a Master’s of Industrial Relations from Queen’s University which provided him with an opportunity to study collective bargaining and labour law. In this program, he completed a research project on the journeyperson skills shortage in Canada. He also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from the University of Guelph, and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from Carleton University which gave him a strong understanding of psychology, business and economics, which he has continued to build upon through life and work experience.
Sean has also taught at Algonquin College(Ottawa, Ontario) and is very excited and eager to join PSB. He is also looking forward to engaging with students in their own journey in collective bargaining and industrial relations.
Please join us in welcoming Sean to the Pilon School of Business community.
