It is with mixed emotions that I share the upcoming retirement of our colleague Roger Halfacre who has been with PSB since 2003. We will truly miss him.
Before joining PSB, Roger had many years of success in the Travel and Tourism industry where he held positions as both a retail and corporate travel counsellor, along with management positions in retail travel, inbound and outbound tour operation, religious pilgrimages, ground transportation, and conference & event planning.
During his career, a highlight was serving as Director of Transportation for World Youth Day 2002 (Papal visit to Toronto) for which he won the Canadian Special Events’ Industry STAR Award for “Outstanding Logistical Achievement”. When Roger first joined PSB, he taught a variety of courses in the Travel and Tourism program providing invaluable support and guidance to students and collaborating with faculty colleagues to deliver memorable learning experiences. He also served as Academic Advisor and Program Coordinator where he applied his travel and tourism industry experience and depth of knowledge to the quality of the curriculum and support for students. When the program was suspended, Roger’s commitment to students didn’t waver as he assisted the final students in fulfilling program requirements and attended graduation with them in June 2019.
Roger has also served as Academic Advisor and Program Coordinator in the General Business Diploma Program and most recently contributed to the curriculum updates and delivery of the Professional Edge course where students assess their professional skills and abilities connected to their personal development, leadership, and working in teams and career development. This semester we had some faculty colleagues delivering the course for the first time and commented on how incredibly supportive and helpful Roger has been during their onboarding. For those of you who know Roger, he is always eager to assist others thoughtfully and quick to recognize and acknowledge the success of others.
Roger’s message to his colleagues: “ I would like to take the opportunity to thank the many people I have worked with at Sheridan over the years. Being able to finish my career working in a post-secondary institution has been a pinnacle for me. Serving as a mentor to many learners, collaborating with other professionals on numerous projects and continuing to grow as a person and a life-long learner are fond memories I shall carry with me in retirement. I plan to spend time in family genealogical research, including participating in the Congrès Mondial Acadian in 2024, travelling – while I have the mobility to do so, and improving my watercolour painting techniques. Best wishes to you all”.
Roger’s last day is June 30th. Please join me in thanking Roger for his contributions to PSB and wishing him all the best in his retirement. Roger, here’s to the many opportunities ahead and your continued passion for travel.
