Discovering Careers in Finance

On Friday, March 25, 2022, the Pilon School of Business, in partnership with Sheridan Student Alumni and Career Services, hosted a Discovering Careers in Finance event. The event was attended by 40 students in the Finance diploma and degree programs, who had the opportunity to connect with an insightful panel of guest speakers.

  • Cheryl Mitchell, Director, Centre for Entrepreneurship, Humber College
  • Joy Opaluwa, Coordinator, Finance & Operations, IFSE Institute
  • Kiran Parmar Mookerjee, Financial Advisor, RBC
  • Kristina Worden, National Oversight, Scotia Wealth Management

Special guest, Ramsha Shazad, Branch Manager from TD attended to share career opportunities available at TD.

Panellist, Kristina Worden, provided insightful advice for students on effectively networking:

  • Be genuine in your interest in others and the moments you share with them.
  • Listen and show you care.
  • All business is personal, but the very best business is very personal.

In breakout sessions with the panellists, students were given the opportunity to ask questions, and students with the best questions were awarded prizes at the end of the event. The top question asked to panellist Joy Opaluwa was “What keeps you competitive in your role? And how has your role changed in the organization due to automation?” Joy responded “I am an ongoing learner who keeps up-to-date with content that accrues value to my role. One of the changes was the process of switching from paper to a digitalized process. Moreover, there was a big component of supporting people on the change, since change is never easy.”

The Discovering Careers in Finance event encouraged Finance diploma and degree students to actively engage with the distinguished panellists, and contemplate different career paths. The insightful advice and responses by the panellists will surely serve students well as they progress through their programs and into their future careers.

Thank you to Lesley Rumsby, Program Support, PSB, for organizing a successful event. Additionally, thank you to the event moderators, Allisha Seguire, Alumni Coordinator, External Relations, and Sandra Yu, Employment Development Specialist, Career-Integrated Learning.
