Get Involved at the Davis Campus
By: Professor John MacRae
Get Involved to build your leadership skills at the Pilon School of Business on the Davis Campus.
There is nothing like being a part of a Club or Association to build your leadership skills and be a part of the Sheridan Community. Students at the Davis campus have built and run business clubs of all business disciplines and with a wide variety of activities and events for many years. Go to this PSB Web page to sign up for an Association you are interested in and receive more info: http://biz.sheridancollege.ca/getinvolved/
By joining a club you are taking advantage of opportunities for career growth, camaraderie and success! This past year we had many students run activities for students including; The Sheridan Business Council, The Sheridan Finance and Accounting Association, the Sheridan Office Administration Association, the Sheridan Bruins H.R. Association and the Sheridan Marketing Association, Enactus an entrepreneurial organization and Toastmasters a public speaking club.
These clubs had many successful and unique activities on campus and off. The Business Council (SBC) had its “Be The Change Project” (creating community on campus) that for the third year in a row organized an On-Campus Garden, Offered a “Celebrate the Harvest” free Pasta Event (fresh vegetable sauce from the garden) , free Pancake Breakfast (Pasta and Pancakes were cooked by the Cafeteria – thank-you). More “Be the Change” events were held in conjunction with the Career Center including a “Feel Good Friday” Activities, food and the Elf Movie (first in the Atrium) a Valentine’s Day Movie and the Association Day.
The newest Association at Davis, Sheridan Office Administration Association (SOAA) were active organizing the Sixth Annual Sheridan Dragons’ Den. Several Sheridan student Entrepreneurs pitched their business ideas to win prizes and advice from local dragons!! Here is first Place Ali Al Shirawi with Armando Toossi (Sheridan Marketing Alumni). Ali had an “Uber like” sharing business idea that delivered groceries. All elements of the event were very professional and took our event to a new level!
The SOAA also organized a very successful Fashion show and Talent Night in the Den in conjunction with the Student Union. There were a range of very exciting contestants including single and group performers from a range of genres. Together it showcased an entertaining Canadian cultural mix from Rap to Punjabi to English and more. The Pub was filled to capacity.
The Sheridan Bruins Human Resources Association (SBHRA) was very active in 2015/2016 with two Professional Association Events (HRPA), a visit to Pratt Whitney’s HR department, Resume Outreach and other activities. At Pratt Whitney we learned about best HR practices and many different HR careers providing students with lots of insight!
The Sheridan Finance and Accounting Association (SFAA) also had an active year as well with The Stock Market Challenge, The Taxation Workshop, a visit to the Stock market and support of the CPA. The stock market challenge is an online game that allows you to manage a fictitious portfolio of stocks and winning prizes for most improved value. This ran throughout the year with several winners. Sidney Liburd delivered an excellent tax workshop showing students the key areas to include in their taxes –better understanding of how to complete them.
The Sheridan Marketing Association (SMA) helped several on-campus clients by designing marketing campaigns including posters and events. This year clients included the Sheridan Comic Con and The Entrepreneur Event.
So “Be the Change” by joining a Sheridan Business Club or Association for the experience and for the fun!! (opens in a new tab)
